In October we had a weekend walking in the Lakes and stayed in a cabin near Threlkeld with an epic view of Blencathra. We woke on Sunday morning to a hard frost, the first of the season, the fields in shadow and the might of Blencathra illuminated by the rising sun. It was a stunning view. From the warmth of the cabin I worked on a few watercolour sketches that later became the reference for this painting.
Painted in oils with a palette knife the rich texture and subtle use of colour describes the landscape, the warm tones of the hills in contrast to the cool fields.
Painted on a cradled wooden panel this painting is presented unframed, the clean wood of the panel acting as a frame.
If you love the Lake District and those sunny crisp autumn mornings this piece will evoke happy memories.
