Ian Davenport Artist

August 2024

I’ve always had a passion for art, after inheriting an old set of oils from a Great Uncle I began painting in my early teens but with a growing family and a busy job art had to take a back seat. Fast forward to 2020, the covid pandemic, and a realisation that life is short, I left behind a 35-year career in the food industry to follow my dream, to focus full time on art and become an artist. A monumental, life changing decision!

In June 2023 I graduated with a First Class (Hons) Degree in Fine Arts and Crafts from the University of Hull, taught at University Campus Doncaster, by fantastic, inspirational tutors. Three great years immersed in art.

Inspiration for my art comes from a love of the outdoors. By travelling through the landscape either by bike or on foot and experiencing how the seasons, the weather and the changing light impacts on colour is reflected in my art practice. The result is an expressive style influenced by the colour and language of impressionism and contemporary artist such as David Hockney and Joan Eardley.

I am 58, married with 3 children and I have lived in Tickhill, South Yorkshire for 26 years. South Yorkshire is a rich source of inspiration with the big skies of the coastal ‘flatlands’ to the East and the drama of the Pennine hills to the West. South Yorkshire is also home to a fast growing, vibrant community of local artists.

I have exhibited locally with solo shows in Tickhill, Retford, Mexborough and Doncaster with exhibitions booked through to 2025. I have recently exhibited and demonstrated at Patchings Art Festival 2023 & 2024, Harrogate Art Fair 2023, Dovecot Gallery, Factory Festival of Creative Arts 2024.

Through my studies and developing art practice I hope to become an established commercial artist working from my lovely home studio in Tickhill and would welcome any enquiries about commissions, workshops and demonstrations.

At home in my Tickhill studio.
